The Sign of the Beaver

Today I’m giving a report on a book I really enjoyed. The book is called “The Sign of the Beaver” and was written by a woman named Elizabeth George Speare.

This is the story of a 12-year-old boy named Matt, who has just finished helping his father build a cabin for their family in the wilderness of Maine.

Matt’s father travels far away to collect the rest of their family, and he leaves Matt in charge of watching the cabin while he’s gone.

Matt has to chop firewood, haul water from the creek, and take care of the house and garden.

He meets wild animals, encounters a stranger, and comes to know a tribe of Indians.

The Indian chief asks Matt to teach his 14-year-old grandson, Attean, how to read and write in English because he thinks it will help their tribe.

But Attean does not like Matt and does not want to learn English.

This might be Matt’s hardest job ever!

I really enjoyed reading this book. From 1-10, I give this story a rating of 8, and highly recommend it to all of you.

Thank you!
